“Heavy Lifting” Now Live in Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction!

As soon as I heard that there was going to be a Disabled People Destroy anthology series last summer, I started plotting.

If you’re not familiar with the Destroy project, it’s a series that started with Women Destroy Science Fiction when critics said that woman writers were ruining the genre. Since then, there’s been Queers Destroy Science Fiction and People of Color Destroy Science Fiction (As well as Destroy Fantasy and Destroy Horror editions). Everyone working on these anthologies, from the writers to the interviewers to the editors, are part of the marginalized group of that particular anthology. Most of the characters in Destroy stories are too, because the idea behind this series is not so much to destroy, but to normalize narratives that have often been left out (or worse, badly handled) in the genre.

Disabled People Destroy was a project I’d hoped to be part of for a very long time.

So, I’m pleased to announce my story “Heavy Lifting” is now free to read online. It took me many drafts and much pacing and wringing of hands to get this story right. But it’s important to me to create disabled characters who are well balanced, otherwise healthy, and are perfectly willing to go on an adventure.

Sort of like me.

I always write to music. Strangely enough, I never found the perfect song to be the soundtrack of the story while I was writing it, but settled on “Shadow Preachers” by Zella Day because of deadlines. Also, I liked the song.

Hope you enjoy!

P.S. My personal essay for the Disabled Destroy series is also free to read here.

Publishing Updates, Fundraisers, and Readercon!

In my typical fashion, I have neglected this blog and so I’ve had a few announcement pile up since my last post.

Publishing

  • The contract has been signed so I can officially announce that my story “Heavy Lifting” will be published in Uncanny Magazine‘s special issue of Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction! It’s scheduled to come out in the September/October issue.
  • I also had a story accepted by Fireside Magazine! This is my first story to appear in this magazine and I’m so thrilled. Not sure when it’s scheduled to be published yet, but I will update the blog when I know.
  • Lastly, my story “And Yet” published by Uncanny Magazine back in March has been translated into Chinese by Science Fiction World. This is my first translation and I’m told this is one of the most read science fiction magazines in the world!

Fundraisers

  • Clarion West – the workshop I was fortunate enough to attend last year – is running its annual writing challenge to support current and future students. I’ve signed up and am looking for sponsors. If you’d like to read about my goals and the rewards I’m offering sponsors, here’s the information.
  • And if we hit our sponsorship goal, my class is doing a joint project with the prompt “Mars is Burning”.
  • Woman Up to No Good is an anthology project that has a current for funding. It’ll have my story “Five Meters Ahead, Two Centuries Away”.  Check it out here.

Readercon

This is just to say I will be at the conference this year. Feel free to come say hi!

And that’s it! Until next time, lovely readers.

New Story is Up at Flash Fiction Online

Won’t lie, publication days are awesome. Technically, “Listen and You’ll Hear Us Speak” went live yesterday, but I was too brain fried last night to be trusted with stringing words together into coherent sentences. So here we are.

This very short story was an experiment to see if I could weave two parallel story lines with two separate points of view into a cohesive whole in a thousand words. I think it worked.

The song that was on repeat while I was writing/revising this story was “My Medea” by Vienna Teng.

Hope you enjoy!

And It’s Live! Voices in Solitude at Daily Science Fiction

Yay! Daily Science Fiction has emailed Voices in Solitude out to subscribers today! This is my second time appearing at DSF and being a long time reader of the magazine, I’m thrilled.

For those of you who aren’t subscribed to DSF you can find the story posted here.

If you want to know which song was my soundtrack as I wrote this story, you can find it here.

Apologizes for my lack of response on social media today. I’m currently traveling abroad and my email is being less than helpful. Also, I’m relying on WiFi. Also, I’m having too much fun wandering around the city to bother checking my devices regularly.

Regardless, hope you enjoyed the story!

Update: Story Sale to Escape Pod!

UPDATE 3/7/15: “Voices in Solitude is schedule to come out one March 31st, 2015 at DSF and “Beyond the Trenches We Lie” is scheduled for May 2015!

I’m excited to announce that my story “Beyond the Trenches We Lie” is going to be published by Escape Pod magazine. This was my winning story from the Codex contest Setting the Stage back in 2013. The goal of this particular contest was to write a story based on the scene given to you by another contestant. So, special thanks to James Beamon for giving me such an awesome setting to work from and to all my beta readers and fellow Codexians who believed in this crazy story even when I didn’t.

I don’t have a date of publication yet for this piece or for “Voices in Solitude” which got picked up by Daily Science Fiction in December. But when I do, I’ll be sure to post an update.

Publishing Update – October 2013

Just a quick update to report some good news. My story “I’m Still Here” just got accepted for publication at Buzzy Mag! This story was my submission to Viable Paradise last year and I’m thrilled that it’s found a good home.

Special thanks to the Bridge people and to the instructors and fellow classmates at VP who gave tons of useful feedback as well as lots of encouragement as I worked through the early drafts of this thing.

I don’t have a date for publication yet, but I’ll keep you updated!

Story LInk Love #2

I realized the other day that I haven’t done this in awhile. Here are a few favorites science fiction/fantasy stories I’ve read online over the last couple of months.

These are stories I wish I wrote, but am glad I didn’t because I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed them as much if I had.

Non-Zero Probabilities by N. K. Jemisin (this one’s been around for awhile, but I just discovered it – so it’s new to me.)
Biographical Fragments of the Life of Julian Prince by Jake Kerr
The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere by John Chu
Melancholia in Bloom by Damien Walters Grintalis
Alive, Alive Oh by Sylvia Spruck Wrigley

Also, if you like story lists, Flash Fiction Chronicles put together this one: 100+ Links to Great Short Stories

In other news, The One Sentence Anthology is now live! You can check it out here

Lastly, I will be at Readercon this year. This is my first time going and I don’t have a set schedule, but I will probably be tweeting about panels and posting pictures. So excited!

Publishing Updates: May 2013

So remember when I said I was bad at keeping up with my blog? It’s true, I’m awful at it. As much as I love reading articles and other people’s opinions, I enjoy writing stories more than blog posts. But this post is an exception, I’m thrilled to be writing this because, dear reader, I have good news: I’ve had three stories accepted for publication!

The first is a story called “Letters from Within” and it’s going to be in a little project called the One-Sentence Mini Anthology. This was an interesting challenge – telling a story in one sentence and in less than 350 words. In some ways, it was like the Twitter stories I use to write, except, you know, different. Regardless, it was lots of fun and I’m glad I got to be a part of this project. The anthology should be coming out soon and I will add a link when it does.

The second acceptance is for a story called “The Aorta”. It’s going to be in an anthology called Andromeda’s Children put together by Fringeworks. My piece is going to be in Volume 2 and the anthology is expected to come out Winter 2013. I couldn’t be happier that this story has found a home and is now going to be haunting someone else’s dreams.

Lastly, I sold a story to Daily Science Fiction! The piece is called “Tell Them of the Sky” and this is my first professional sale. I’ve known about this acceptance for a little while now but I’m still bouncing off the walls with excitement. I don’t know yet when it’s suppose to come out, but I will absolutely post an update as soon as I find out.

So sorry, dear reader, I don’t have any links yet to the actual stories themselves. But after a long stretch of stillness, they are coming.

News and Updates

Last month I resigned from my position as Editorial Assistance at Every Day Fiction. I had been reading for EDF for over two years and learned so much about storytelling and the industry while I was there. But I wanted to spend more time writing and move on to other things.

It seems though, I wasn’t off the hook that quickly. Another opportunity presented itself mere days after I handed in my notice (more or less). Flash Fiction Chronicles (EDF’s sister site) was looking for an interviewer that would talk to the author of the top story at EDF each month.

I don’t have much experience interviewing, but I guess I didn’t have much experience when I started writing either. So, naturally, I accepted.

If you would like to see my very first interview, it can be found here. My first victim (not really – I hope) is Dustin Adams, author of the story The Gift. This was lots of fun and I hope you enjoy it too.
