I have really exciting new today. My novelette “Burn or the Episodic Life of Sam Wells as a Super“, first published in Uncanny Magazine, is a finalist for the Hugo Award!

The Hugo Award is an annual science fiction and fantasy award celebrating writers, artists, podcasters, game writers, editors, and TV/film writers. It is one of the most prestigious awards in the field and the ceremony is hosted every year by the World Science Fiction Convention or WorldCon. This year the convention will be on Dec 15th-19th, 2021 in Washington, DC.

Year End Eligibility Post 2020

Oh man, what a year. It feels like it’s been both a month long and stretching out for centuries. Still, I can’t complain too much, I’ve been lucky. And I know I’ve said this every year for the last few years, but this has truly been an amazing year for my writing career. I got stories accepted by magazines that I’ve been trying to break into for a decade. I finished some very difficult pieces and did some tie-in writing for Magic the Gathering. Also, I won a Nebula!

So, yeah, no complaints.

I had two stories come out this year – a novelette and short story. I’d be thrilled if you checked them out. They both have audio versions too.

“Team Work” Now Live at Fireside Magazine!

I’m please to say that my short story “Team Work” is now up and free to read (or listen to) at Fireside Magazine!

My goal for this story was to get better at writing flash fiction – stories that are 1,000 words or less. You’d think that after spending so many years as an editor assistant for Every Day Fiction and Flash Fiction Online, I could put together a flash story, no problem. But unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Writing them still takes tons of practice.

Anyway, in this story I wanted to combine my love of weird, almost useless superhero powers with anxiety and acceptance. I listened to tunnels pt.2 by Joshua Burnside on repeat while I was writing and editing this story. For me, the song captured a sense of urgency and anxiety.

I also want to add that if you’ve enjoyed my stories or the magazines that published them, please consider getting a subscription or supporting them on Patreon. Most fiction magazines run on razor thin margins and need the support of readers to survive. Fireside Magazine makes both ebooks and print books for their subscribers. I get the print books quarterly and they’re beautiful!
