Schedule for Capclave 2021

It’s been a few weeks since my last post. I haven’t had much news to report – I’ve mostly been working on stories that will be published later this year or early 2022. If everything goes to plan, I’ll have 3 more stories coming out in 2021, the first of which is “Questions Asked in the Belly of the World” which will be published at Tor.com on September 29th!

In the meantime, I will be at Capclave on Oct. 1st – Oct 3rd. I’m so excited and it’ll be wonderful to meet up with old friends and make new ones.

Here’s my schedule:

  • Non Traditional Protagonists – Saturday, Oct 2nd @ 11am EST
    • Description: The typical protagonist is an unmarried young white male (or more recently female). But what about protagonists who don’t fit this mold. What about older characters, non-white characters, and characters with disabilities or handicaps? How does changing the protagonist change the story? And are there stories that require such a character to be told?

Schedule for the 2020 Nebula Virtual Conference

I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe these last few months. I’m one of the lucky ones who is able to work from home. It’s both great and lonely and I’ve never been so grateful to have a dog. Tilly is making sure I’m getting up for walks a few times a day and going to bed a reasonable times because there’s no better alarm clock than an alarm clock dog.

Most of the conferences I was planning on going to this year have been cancelled. Fortunately, the Nebula Conference put on by Science Fiction Writers of America is going to be virtual the weekend. In addition to the awards ceremony on Saturday night (which will be streamed live and free to all), they have put together a wonderful list of panels.

I’ll be on two panels on Sunday:

Moving the Line: Advanced Imposter Syndrome – May 31, 2020 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm EST

Panelists:Mike Chen (He/Him), G. V. Anderson, K.M. Szpara, A. T. Greenblatt and Karen Osborne (moderator)

Authors discuss strategies to cope with their own Imposter Syndrome as their careers evolve and they branch out into new areas of writing.

Forming and Sustaining a Successful Writing or Critique Group – May 31, 2020 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm EST

Panelists:A. T. Greenblatt, A.C. Wise, Vylar Kaftan, Curtis C. Chen and Rebecca Gomez Farrell (moderator)

Panelists will discuss the factors that go into building a successful group, both online and in-person, and what they’ve learned about keeping one going.

ICFA Schedule 2020

Baltimore Book Festival 2019 Schedule

It’s not really a convention per se, but I love the Baltimore Book Festival. It brings in a great draw of writers from up and down the East Coast. I adore seeing my friends there and always meet new people every year. If you’re a speculative fiction writer and in the area, I recommend checking out the Science Fiction Writer of America events at the festival. They have a constant stream of panels Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Here’s the full schedule.

This year, the festival will be from Nov 1st-3rd. I’ll be on two panels on Saturday, Nov 2nd. They are:

The Why and How of Accessibility Guidelines – May 17th, 2:00 pm

  • People with disabilities used to be hidden away as a matter of course. Buildings were not built to be accommodating and that excluded people from participating fully in society. That began to change with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but he had to travel with a portable ramp. It took another sixty years to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. In the 21st century, people still fight for access. The goal of The Accessibility Checklist for SFWA Spaces is full accessibility to all participants, attendees, and guests of SFWA events such as the Nebula Conference. Our panelists give examples of the experiences that drove it, discuss the importance of its creation, and how it’s being used by SFWA and convention-runners all around the country. As we move forward, what should the future of accessibility look like?

Best Science Fiction of the Year Vol. 4 + ICFA Schedule

So, my first bit of exciting news is that my story “Heavy Lifting” is going to be republished in Neil Clarke’s Best Science Fiction of the Year Vol. 4! This story first appeared in Uncanny’s Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction and it’s quite dear to me. It was also my attempt to learn how to write better science fiction stories, since I naturally gravitate towards fantasy.

Second, I’ll be attending the International Conference of Fine Arts (ICFA) again this year. I’m excited and looking forward to meeting new and old friends there. Also, I’m going to be reading with some awesome people!

Baltimore Book Festival Schedule 2018

So, next up, I’m going to be at the Baltimore Book Festival in a few weeks! This festival happens every year around the Inner Harbor and authors from up and down the Eastern Seaboard like to attend. It’s always a lot of fun.

ConFusion Schedule 2018

Happy New Year!

In a few weeks, I’m heading to ConFusion in Detroit, MI. It’ll be my first time at this convention and I’m excited for it! The literary programing team was kind enough to include me on some panels. I also have a reading with the fabulous Marissa Lingen and Izzy Wasserstein.

Here’s my schedule:

11am Saturday Charlevoix – Using Real Scientific History To Enhance Fantasy World-Building
Secondary-world fantasies often draw on an ahistoric view of the past, intermingling technological, scientific, and social advancements that span thousands of years in the real world. The effect is quasi-medieval societies that are in some ways anachronistically modern, but in many ways far less advanced than the real-world cultures on which they’re based. Let’s talk about the real science and technology of the world’s post-classical eras and how we can use the real history of science and technology to build deeper and more interesting worlds.

12pm Sunday Interlochen – The Setting As Character
In Science Fiction and Fantasy, settings can literally come alive–be it via the talking flowers of Through The Looking Glass or the rage of Peter Quill’s creepy dad-planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. In Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch universe where ships have minds, main characters can be both people and places at the same time. Are living settings a science fiction/fantasy extension of the classic “Hero Vs. Nature” story? How do they exist in conversation with real-world beliefs about whether the world around us has a will of its own?

2pm Sunday Charlevoix – A Novel Look at the Short Story
Short stories require a different approach to pacing, character, world-building, exposition, and plot than longer works. Let’s explore the tools we use to convey important information to the reader when we have a lot fewer words to do it with.
