New Story: “The Memory of a Memory is a Spirit”

Hello friends and friendly readers! I’m happy to share that I have a new story available in Lightspeed Magazine! It’s called “The Memory of a Memory is a Spirit” which is definitely my most poetic title to date. I’m not going to talk about my process and the journey of this story too much in this post because there’s an author interview where I do just that.

I will say instead that I’m super excited to have a story published in Lightspeed Magazine. It was one of the first magazines I read when I started writing eleven years ago and one of the first places I submitted a story to. It’s been on my list of markets I’d like to be published in for a very long time.

My writing soundtrack for this story was two songs by the band Daughter. The first is a cover of the song Poke by Frightened Rabbit and the other song is called Lifeforms. So dark and broody and I love it.

Hope you enjoy the story!

“One Time, A Reluctant Traveler” Out Now at Clarkesworld!

Hello all! I’m excited to announce that I have a new story out. It’s called “One Time, A Reluctant Traveler” published in Clarkesworld Magazine!

This is a story I wrote during the pandemic and consequently, it was a difficult story to write. Partly because global catastrophes tend to atrophy your creativity. Partly because it’s a story about depression and the cyclical and generational nature of it.

But it also includes things which I had so much fun writing, like a sarcastic park ranger robot and stories within stories. It’s been years since I’ve ridden a bike outside, but I had a great time reimagining what that would feel like in a strange landscape.

In terms of music, a weird thing has been happening to me lately. When I write, I usually find one or two songs that act as a soundtrack to the story, then I listen to them on repeat. That hasn’t been the case lately. Instead I’ve been listening to playlists or entire albums. But I think of all the songs I listened to while writing this, Jordan Klassen’s Virtuous Circle and Surprised/Not Surprised are the two songs I associate most with this piece.

As always, I hope you enjoy the story. And more importantly, I hope you are staying safe and healthy.

“On the Other Side of the Line” Now Live at Fireside Magazine!

I’m very excited to announce that my story “On the Other Side of the Line” is now live and free to read over at Fireside Magazine! It’s narrated by the fantastic C. S. E. Cooney and it has an amazing illustration by Amanda Makepeace.

This isn’t a happy story, but it’s one I felt I needed to write. It was fueled by loss and the looming grimness of our future. It was heavily influenced by some traveling I did where there was an international fence line and witnessing people on the other side standing of it, staring through the wires.

It’s not a happy story, but I’m happy with the way it turned out.

The dog in the story is based on a real one. He name was Tiger and he was the best. We lost him over a year ago and I still miss him dearly.

Oh! I almost forgot. The song I listened to on repeat while writing and editing this story was Now and Not Yet by Hammock.

Give your loved ones a hug tonight.

“Move Forward, Disappear, Transcend” Now Live at Clarkesworld!

I’m a few days late in posting this, but I have a new story out! “Move Forward, Disappear, Transcend” is now available for your reading pleasure over at Clarkesworld Magazine!

With every story I write, I always try to do something that I haven’t tried before. With this piece, that meant writing a story from the point of view of a much older protagonist than myself. It took me a few drafts to get right.

My soundtrack for this story was Empiricist by Typhoon. (Their whole album “Offerings” is great though, I highly recommend.)

If you like this story or any other story Clarkesworld has published, please consider supporting them.

Happy reading!

“Give the Family My Love” Live at Clarkesworld Magazine!

I’m thrilled to announce that my story “Give the Family My Love” is now free to read over at Clarkesworld Magazine! In a few weeks, it will also be narrated by Kate Baker and on the Clarkesworld podcast. I’ll post a link when that’s available.

This is my first story to appear in Clarkesworld and it took me years to write. For a long time, I didn’t quite have the skills to tell it and frankly, the future Earth in this story is based on climate change research, and it terrifies me.

I don’t remember what I was listening to when I was working on the first draft of this story (it was that long ago), but for later drafts is was Florence + The Machine’s Big God on repeat.

Hope you enjoy the story!

Story Sale to Mothership Zeta!

Hey, so you know this post I made a while ago? Yeah, I figured out how the story ended. And made that “placeholder” title the “real” title. Also, sold it to Mothership Zeta!

So, I’m beyond thrilled. One of my biggest worries when writing this was how will I find a home for it? It’s way too light and silly for most short story magazines. But I loved my character’s voice, so I wrote it anyway. After sending it out a few times and getting rejections that said “Good story, but not a good fit for us” I was worried I was right.

But then this brand new magazine called Mothership Zeta came along looking for fun, trope-bending stories and well, you can figure out how it went from there.

So I guess my point is write what you want. There will always be new markets and anthology calls. The universe is expanding and it has a way of making room for our stories.

A Non-Hero’s Guide to the Road of Monsters will appear in Mothership Zeta’s Issue #3 in March, 2016.
