Comings and Goings – Late May & Early June 2022

I can’t remember when I posted here last and honestly, I’m a little too lazy right now to check, but I think it’s been a while. I’m slowly getting used to living in a new city. Or at least getting a little less lost, which is nice. I’m really enjoying the springtime greenery and looking forward to summer.

Speaking of upcoming things, I will be at the virtual Nebula Convention next weekend (May 19th-May 22nd). I also have a virtual reading at NYRSF on June 7th. Here’s the information for both:

At the Nebulas, I’ll be on two panels:

The Future of Disability Representation – May 20th at 3pm PST – with Effie Seiberg, Andi C. Buchanan, Nicola Griffith, A. T. Greenblatt, and Nalini Haynes

Description: Writers with disabilities prop up excellent examples of representation, discuss how to overcome harmful tropes and stereotypes, and explore, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the future of portraying disability in SFF.

The Second Person and You – May 22nd at 10:30am – P H Lee, Suzan Palumbo, Lauren Ring, Eden Royce, and A. T. Greenblatt

Description: The second person is often regarded as difficult, complex, or experimental. But it doesn’t need to be! Explore how your work could benefit from this technique with authors who have intentionally and successfully written from this perspective.

My second event is an author reading at the NYRSF series. It will be streamed on the internet free for all on June 7th at 7pm!

Convention Schedule for June 2021

“June is ages away,” I told myself. “You don’t need to think too hard about events in June yet.” Then I looked at a calendar.

With June being three days away, I thought I should mention that I’m going to be at three different events in the next few weeks in the form of panels, readings, and Q&A sessions. Here’s the list:

  1. Nebula Conference Online – June 4th-6th

I will be on a panel on June 4th, 8:00 am-9:00 am PDT on “Crafting the First Line” with Leah Cypess, C. L. Polk (they/them), Kristin Osani (moderator) and P. Djèlí Clark.

I will also be hanging out virtually at the con most the weekend. Please feel free to say hello if you see me!

2. 4th Street Fantasy – June 18th-20th

There will be a prerecorded panel with Elizabeth Bear, Robyn Bennis, Reuben Poling (Moderator), Jasmine Silvera,
John Wiswell, and myself where we talk about “Personalizing the Apocalypse: Meaningful Stakes on Grand Scales”. Then on June 19th at 4:00 pm CDT, we’ll be doing a live Q&A with the audience.

3. Locus Awards Weekend – June 23rd-26th (By the way, I’m a finalist for the Locus Awards!)

Leading up the the Locus Award Ceremony on June 26th, there will be several evenings of readings by the finalists. I’ll be giving a reading on Thursday June 24th at 5:00 pm PDT with one other author. (Not sure who yet, but the mystery is thrilling.)

One word of caution, please note the time zones if you’re planning on coming to these events. They are all virtual, though I believe all of them require a registration fee ($20- $125). Hope to see you there!

“Burn or the Episodic Life of Sam Wells as a Super” Finalist for the Nebula Awards!!!

I’m so thrilled to announce that my novelette “Burn or the Episodic Life of Sam Wells as a Super” which was originally published in Uncanny Magazine, is a finalist for the 2020 Nebula Award!

The finalists were announced last night by having SAG/AFTRA professional audiobook narrators do one minute reading of all the nominated works. It was really cool! Check out the video. (“Burn” starts around the 21:26 mark.)

If you’re wondering what the Nebula Awards are, they’re like the Golden Globes for science fiction and fantasy writers. Every year members of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) nominate works in several categories and vote on the final ballot. There’s a conference and an awards ceremony on the weekend of June 4th-6th. Like last year, the conference and ceremony will be online.

Here’s the full list of nominees.

The winners will be announced on June 5th, 2021.

I know I’ve said this in the past, but it’s still true. I’m so honored to have this story as a finalist among such good writers and their amazing work.

“Give the Family My Love” Wins a Nebula Award!

So, this happened. “Give The Family My Love” published in Clarkesworld Magazine won the Nebula award for Best Short Story last night. Honestly, I’m still completely stunned and I would love to say something profound here, but I’m really, really tired tonight.

So I figured I’ll transcribed my acceptance speech here instead

Here’s the speech:

Um, so, wow. This is a shock and surprise. Thank you all so, so much for this amazing honor. It is truly a dream come true. Writing is a lonely process, but nothing is created alone.

So, I’d like to thank Neil Clarke for taking a chance on this story and to Kate Baker for her amazing narration. Thank you to my fabulous critique group who saw a half finished draft of this story several years ago and understood what I was trying to do.

Thank you to all my friends, online and in-person, who have been my consistent support network. And thank you to my family who have always been supportive and encouraging through the ups and downs in my career. Who don’t mind that I disappear for hours on the weekends to write. I love you very much.

Finally, thank you to all the readers who believed in this story. These are truly terrifying times where tomorrow is not necessarily guaranteed. But being human means we’re complicated creatures with complicated emotions and opposable thumbs. Which means we can hold our fear and our dread in one hand and our hope in the other.

And I hope you hold tight to that hope, that desire to make good art and make the world a bit better, even when things look bleak.

Especially when things look bleak.

Schedule for the 2020 Nebula Virtual Conference

I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe these last few months. I’m one of the lucky ones who is able to work from home. It’s both great and lonely and I’ve never been so grateful to have a dog. Tilly is making sure I’m getting up for walks a few times a day and going to bed a reasonable times because there’s no better alarm clock than an alarm clock dog.

Most of the conferences I was planning on going to this year have been cancelled. Fortunately, the Nebula Conference put on by Science Fiction Writers of America is going to be virtual the weekend. In addition to the awards ceremony on Saturday night (which will be streamed live and free to all), they have put together a wonderful list of panels.

I’ll be on two panels on Sunday:

Moving the Line: Advanced Imposter Syndrome – May 31, 2020 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm EST

Authors discuss strategies to cope with their own Imposter Syndrome as their careers evolve and they branch out into new areas of writing.

Forming and Sustaining a Successful Writing or Critique Group – May 31, 2020 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm EST

Panelists:A. T. Greenblatt, A.C. Wise, Vylar Kaftan, Curtis C. Chen and Rebecca Gomez Farrell (moderator)

Panelists will discuss the factors that go into building a successful group, both online and in-person, and what they’ve learned about keeping one going.

The Why and How of Accessibility Guidelines – May 17th, 2:00 pm

  • People with disabilities used to be hidden away as a matter of course. Buildings were not built to be accommodating and that excluded people from participating fully in society. That began to change with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but he had to travel with a portable ramp. It took another sixty years to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. In the 21st century, people still fight for access. The goal of The Accessibility Checklist for SFWA Spaces is full accessibility to all participants, attendees, and guests of SFWA events such as the Nebula Conference. Our panelists give examples of the experiences that drove it, discuss the importance of its creation, and how it’s being used by SFWA and convention-runners all around the country. As we move forward, what should the future of accessibility look like?

So this happened. My short story “And Yet“, which was originally published in Uncanny Magazine, is a finalist for the 2018 Nebula Award!

For those who aren’t familiar with the Nebula Awards, they are organized and voted on by the members of Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA). It’s basically like the Golden Globes of science fiction and fantasy writing, with an awards ceremony and everything. Here’s the full list of nominees.

The winners will be announced on May 19th.
