4th Street Fantasy 2022

I totally forgot to write this post and the conference is starting tomorrow. And, if all the flying goes smoothly, I will be in Minneapolis tonight. Also, I’m going to be on some panels. Additionally, I’m very excited to see people again in person and might not have finished my cup of coffee this morning yet, hence stream of consciousness-like wording of this post.

Anyway, here’s my schedule for 4th Street Fantasy:

Designing Worlds for Everyone – 4:00 PM Friday

From airport scanners with only two body type defaults to facial recognition systems that can’t recognize BIPOC, unconscious—or conscious—design decisions from our world that treat people unequally seep into our fantasy worlds. Authors create fantastic worlds full of stairs wheelchair users can’t access or magic systems designed to erase disabilities. But there also exist magic writing systems that dyslexic users excel at and blind earthbenders who don’t have to overcome their disabilities in order to thrive. What are broad principles or specific ways of approaching world-building to include as many people in the fantasy as possible? 

Ambiguous Narrative Stances – 11:30 AM Sunday

What kind of ambiguity serves a story, in endings and in narrative support? Raising complicated questions with no easy answers is all well and good; avoiding dealing with what they mean entirely is an abnegation of responsibility. We can’t control reader interpretations, and there can be power in letting readers fill in for themselves what goes, but when is failing to take an explicit stance a disservice to the reader, and how explicit is it important to be? Where is the line between an ambiguous ending that fails the reader by failing to take a stance, or that serves the reader in forcing them to think through implications to their logical conclusion and intentionally decide on their own reading?

Hope this post finds you all healthy and safe. I’m going to keep this quick today because I’m not feeling well and am quite tired, but I wanted to let you know that I have some exciting things going on next weekend. And it will all be online!

  1. First up, I’ll be on a panel at Luxcon 2022. Troubling Tropes: Depicting Disability – Saturday at 9:00am ET
  2. Next, I have a reading at Flights of Foundry. Reading – 10:00am-11:00am EST in The Eyre. (Note: An hour is a long time to read, so I probably read for 20-30 minutes and host a kaffeeklatsch-like Q&A the rest of the time.)
  3. Lastly, I’ll be teaching a class for Clarion West Online called “Persisting as a Short Story Writer” from 4:00pm-5:00pm. Here’s the details. There’s still a few spots available!

Worldcon 2021 Schedule

Schedule for Philcon 2020

Next weekend one of the oldest east coast cons will be holding a virtual convention. Philcon is running from Nov 20th to Nov 22nd. It’s free to attend and has many different tracks. Check out the program here.

My Schedule for IEEE and Capclave

Greeting all! I mentioned in my post last week that I will be attending two other online conventions this month. Here’s my schedule for both of them.

First up, IEEE. A one day cross over convention between electrical engineers and science fiction writers.

Second, Capclave, which is one of the local conventions I enjoy attending every year. Also, “Give the Family My Love” is a finalist for the Washington Science Fiction Small Press Award, which will be presented Saturday night. I’m so honored to be among such excellent finalists!

  • Panel: Ask Me Anything – Author Edition – Sat 10/17, 9:00 AM
    • Ask our panel of authors absolutely anything about what they do – writing, getting published, elevator pitches, getting an agent, dealing with writers block, writers workshop etc. Includes many non-writer-parts-of-being-a-writer, such as being your own boss, setting schedules, and so on.

How do writers keep everything (relatively) straight for the writer and readers, even while the characters are facing convolutions? How can you explain worldbuilding challenges, such as why time travellers don’t mob every historical event? Panelists will discuss what makes some time travel stories work and which ones do not.

Usually, I’m traveling up and down the east coast for various conferences in September and October. I’m really going to miss that this year, but fortunately, many cons are still happening online.

The first of which is C’monfluence – the virtual incarnation of Confluence. It’s runs from Oct 2nd-4th and registration is free.

Schedule for the 2020 Nebula Virtual Conference

I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe these last few months. I’m one of the lucky ones who is able to work from home. It’s both great and lonely and I’ve never been so grateful to have a dog. Tilly is making sure I’m getting up for walks a few times a day and going to bed a reasonable times because there’s no better alarm clock than an alarm clock dog.

Most of the conferences I was planning on going to this year have been cancelled. Fortunately, the Nebula Conference put on by Science Fiction Writers of America is going to be virtual the weekend. In addition to the awards ceremony on Saturday night (which will be streamed live and free to all), they have put together a wonderful list of panels.

I’ll be on two panels on Sunday:

Moving the Line: Advanced Imposter Syndrome – May 31, 2020 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm EST

Panelists:Mike Chen (He/Him), G. V. Anderson, K.M. Szpara, A. T. Greenblatt and Karen Osborne (moderator)

Authors discuss strategies to cope with their own Imposter Syndrome as their careers evolve and they branch out into new areas of writing.

Forming and Sustaining a Successful Writing or Critique Group – May 31, 2020 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm EST

Panelists:A. T. Greenblatt, A.C. Wise, Vylar Kaftan, Curtis C. Chen and Rebecca Gomez Farrell (moderator)

Panelists will discuss the factors that go into building a successful group, both online and in-person, and what they’ve learned about keeping one going.

ConFusion 2020 Schedule

What do we love most about the epistolary format, and where would we like to see it take us next?

  • How to be a productive writer when your life is already time-starved, list-bound and career-committed.

The Why and How of Accessibility Guidelines – May 17th, 2:00 pm

  • People with disabilities used to be hidden away as a matter of course. Buildings were not built to be accommodating and that excluded people from participating fully in society. That began to change with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but he had to travel with a portable ramp. It took another sixty years to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. In the 21st century, people still fight for access. The goal of The Accessibility Checklist for SFWA Spaces is full accessibility to all participants, attendees, and guests of SFWA events such as the Nebula Conference. Our panelists give examples of the experiences that drove it, discuss the importance of its creation, and how it’s being used by SFWA and convention-runners all around the country. As we move forward, what should the future of accessibility look like?

World Fantasy Convention 2018

I’m planning on attending WFC in Baltimore this year.  I’m super excited for it! This is my second time going to World Fantasy, but the first time I’m on programing. I’ll be on a panel on Sunday and have a reading Friday night.
