I love helping stories become the best versions of themselves. My goal in giving critiques is not to tell the writer what to do, but to help them identify what is working in the story and what could use more polish. This includes story elements like plot threads, character arcs, tension and pacing, and world building. I will happily answer questions and talk through ideas as well.

What Kinds of Stories Do I Critique?

My strength is science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but I love all genres. Right now, I prefer short story and novelettes, but I’m willing to consider a novella, time permitting.

No novels at this time. If you’re looking for a novel critique, Stephanie Feldman is excellent person to reach out to.

What a Critique Includes:

Overall developmental edits in the form of an edit letter as well as a handful of line comments throughout the manuscript. I like to leave notes as I’m reading, including positives ones pointing out where I am delighted as a reader.

If you’d like to chat about the story or ask questions, a 30 min phone or video conversation is also available.

What a Critique Does Not Include:

Line edits and proof reading. Guarantee of sale to a magazine – because no one has that power.

My pricing is based on word count, the depth of critique requested, and whether the writer would like to have a call following the written feedback.

What Are My Qualifications?

I have been a short fiction writer for 15 years and have been critiquing other writers’ work for just as long. I have published over 50 short stories and my short fiction has won a Nebula Award, and has been a finalist for the Hugo, Locus, Sturgeon, and World Fantasy awards in recent years. I have critiqued hundreds of stories and I love it when I get to help an early draft becomes something amazing.
